Avast CyberCapture is a unique malware fighting (especially against the so-called zero-day threats) technology which evolved from Avast DeepScreen and was introduced with the recent Nitro Update. It helps to determine whether the file is malicious or not when Avast is “not sure” about the program because it’s prevalence is extremely low (e.g. not many if any users are running same program on their system). On the other hand it may cause a trouble for users who are running unknown programs, but they are 100% sure they are safe.

The biggest difference between these two is that CyberCapture is not using any virtual environment on the client’s PC, but sending the file to Avast Virus Lab to be analyzed in the cloud.
User is warned with the pop-up notification saying “This file might be dangerous”. At the same time file is being uploaded to the Avast cloud for the detailed analysis.
By default user is not able to launch the program until the analysis is completed, but this behavior can be changed in settings by going to ‘General‘ and switching to ‘Allow me to run suspicious files‘ under ‘Enable CyberCapture‘.

Analysis in the cloud typically takes a few minutes but can also take a few hours. When analysis is done user will get the results in form of pop-up notification saying whether the file is safe to run or not. If the file is identified as malware it is automatically moved to Virus Chest and full system scan is recommended.

Sometimes CyberCapture can be a bit annoying, but there is an easy way to turn it off. Alternative solution (and recommended) is to add the specific program to Avast Exclusion List, so CyberCapture is not triggered when the file is launched.
How to Disable Avast CyberCapture Completelly
To completely turn off CyberCapture in your Avast antivirus 2016 follow these steps:
- Open Avast user interface and go to settings (cog wheel icon in the top-right corner)
- In the ‘General‘ tab (first item) uncheck ‘Enable CyberCapture‘
- Confirm by clicking the ‘OK‘ button
Now Avast CyberCapture is turned off and disabled. To enable it back, just follow the same procedure. Change takes effect immediately, there is no need to restart your computer.
How to Add Program to Avast CyberCapture Exclusion List
Much smarter way then disabling CyberCapture completely is using the exclusion list. When you add the application to the CyberCapture exceptions, it will always pass the scan and open the file without any warning or delay. Unfortunately it is not possible to exclude whole folders from CyberCapture.
Follow these steps to add any file to CyberCapture exclusions in Avast 2016:
- Open Avast user interface and go to settings (cog wheel icon in the top-right corner)
- In the ‘General‘ tab (first item) scroll down to ‘Exclusions‘
- Switch to ‘CyberCapture’ tab and add the application by browsing to its file path. If you are not sure what exactly you should exclude, check the file path on the CyberCapture pop-up
- Confirm by clicking the ‘OK‘ button
